Halloween is finally here, the time of year where children and adults make it their mission to find the scariest and craziest costumes out there. For many this means completing their look with a pair of colourful contact lenses. With the GOC and Moorfields Eye Hospital issuing a cosmetic lens warning ahead of Halloween, we thought this would be the perfect time to inform you of the danger to eye health by wearing ‘spooky’ coloured lenses from retail outlets or online.

‘When worn safely, the risks associated with cosmetic contact lenses are low. However, when lenses are sold illegally, wearers are denied important safety checks and advice, putting them at risk of serious damage to their eye,’ said Vicky McDermott, chief executive of the General Optical Council.

Wearers can suffer infection or even permanent sight loss from the lenses, there is an even higher risk if shared with friends or worn year after year.

Badrul Hussain, consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Moorfields eye hospital states- the clear window at the front of the eye(the cornea) – is delicate and can be scratched easily by inexperienced contact lens wearers. This can expose the eye to organisms that can cause nasty infections, which in extreme cases can result in permanently impaired, or loss of, vision. The main points to remember:

  1. Always buy from reputable sources

  2. Never sleep in your lenses

  3. Never share your lenses

  4. Do not re-use

Without trying to spook you to much this Halloween, as long as you follow the guidelines, wearing coloured contacts is perfectly safe, meaning you can enjoy perfect comfort alongside your spooky style! We wish you an enjoyable and safe Halloween and don’t forget to visit our website to get the code for our biggest offer ever of 25% off complete frames and sunglasses!
