Judith Roberts Opticians was opened in 1996 as an independent, in the seaside village of Mumbles, Swansea. From a small patient base, it has grown organically, with now over 28,000 registered patients.

Opened by Judith and her husband Austin, they decided that living and working in the same area was the best way to serve their community. In fact, many of their first years were spent living above the practice, where they raised their two children - Hannah and Grace. They were strongly influenced by visits to the USA in the 80’s, where they felt the standard of customer service was noticeably better. They decided that when they opened their own practice, they would be "obsessed with the best customer service”.

Alongside this ethos, they cultivated a family environment within the team, resulting in long serving staff members, many of whom are still with the practice.

It is a testament to this, that we are now caring for the children and the grandchildren of those patients who joined us at the very beginning of our journey.”

“In 2013, we were incredibly honoured to win the Opticians Magazine Award as the ‘UK Independent Practice of the Year’. We were finalists again the following year, and in 2015, Austin won the Award for ‘UK Optometrist of the Year’. ”

“Over the years, we have made it an absolute priority to invest in new technology, as well as specialising in contact lenses, including complex lenses. Many keratoconic patients travel across South Wales to see us for scleral lens fitting and care. We also specialise in myopia management and have been active in the developing field for many years. We have been fitting and managing Orthok patients since 2007. Along with this and our level of technology and instrumentation, we truly believe that we offer world class eyecare, in Mumbles, for all the family.”

After 28 years of running the practice, along with the Practice Manger, Julie “the Rock” Evans, all three decided to retire across 2024-2025. Hannah Walters and Patrick Foley became the new Directors. Hannah, after a week of work experience with Judith and Austin at the practice when she was only 14-years old, decided to become an optometrist, as the passion and dedication to community they displayed, had such a profound effect on her. So much so, she has worked at the practice for 15 years. Similarly, Mumbles native Patrick, has known Judith and Austin since his mum took him for his very first eye test at the practice. He again went on to have work experience with them, which was truly inspirational.

Embodying the ethos and the trust that Judith and Austin built, whilst being such an integral part of the Mumbles community remains their absolute priority, along with the new Practice Manager, the wonderful Ali Lloyd-Henderson, who deeply fosters the same values and beliefs. They and the whole team are ready to provide and continue the excellent service.
