New Equipment

Pentacam

The Pentacam images the anterior segment of the eye by a rotating Scheimpflug camera measurement. This rotating process supplies pictures in three dimensions. The center of the cornea is measured very precisely because of this rotational imaging process. The measurement process lasts less than two seconds and minute eye movements are captured and corrected simultaneously. By measuring 25,000 true elevation points, precise representation, repeatability and analysis are guaranteed.

This instrument is a significant advance in measuring the front of the eye. We use it in practice to help: asses the eye for refractive surgery, manage certain corneal conditions such as keratoconus, measure the corneal thickness, obtain better fitting rigid gas permeable contact lenses.

We are the only practice in Wales to offer Pentacam scans of the eye. This can provide many benefits, including
  1. Detailed mapping of the entire cornea for those considering laser refractive surgery, or patients with corneal disorders such as keratoconus
  2. Measurement of the density of the natural lens of the eye, so that cataract progression can be monitored
  3. Measurement of the thickness of the cornea, allowing us to assess glaucoma risk and suitability for laser refractive surgery
  4. 3D mapping of the entire front of the eye, vital for people who cannot have laser refractive surgery but may be considering lens implants instead. Also helpful for people that may be at risk from the 'narrow angle' type of glaucoma.
  5. The 'Holladay Report' for people that have had laser refractive surgery in the past and now require cataract or lens exchange surgery. The Holladay report provides more accurate lens calculations for a greater chance optimizing the post-operative result.

Pachymeter

A pachyneter is an ultrasonic instrument which measures the corneal thickness to a micron( a thousandth of a millimetre). This helps us to asses someone’s suitability for refractive surgery and is very useful in refining intra ocular pressure measurements ie for someone with a family history of glaucoma.
