The Pentacam images the anterior segment of the eye by a rotating Scheimpflug camera measurement. This rotating process supplies pictures in three dimensions. The center of the cornea is measured very precisely because of this rotational imaging process. The measurement process lasts less than two seconds and minute eye movements are captured and corrected simultaneously. By measuring 25,000 true elevation points, precise representation, repeatability and analysis are guaranteed.
This instrument is a significant advance in measuring the front of the eye. We use it in practice to help: asses the eye for refractive surgery, manage certain corneal conditions such as keratoconus, measure the corneal thickness, obtain better fitting rigid gas permeable contact lenses.
We are the only practice in Wales to offer Pentacam scans of the eye. This can provide many benefits, includingA pachyneter is an ultrasonic instrument which measures the corneal thickness to a micron( a thousandth of a millimetre). This helps us to asses someone’s suitability for refractive surgery and is very useful in refining intra ocular pressure measurements ie for someone with a family history of glaucoma.
